Blazing scarlet sun
sinks behind brush fire of clouds,
consumes winter day.
last summer's beech leaves
hang tough in the heavy snow -
they're stubborn that way
five inches of snow
enough to hide the debris
walks don't clear themselves
iced pond, heron poised
silver gleams through cracked surface
frozen dinner served
Puffy chest Robin
Increasing your downy loft
Blizzard lies ahead
Wind on a mountain
whips snow high into piles
toppling time beneath.
cloudless winter sky
shimmering sun points on snow
sculpted rabbit tracks
smiling summer falls
autumnal leaves pale and pass
weary winter springs
Winter where we are
Brings a steady wash of rain
Nobody complains
farewell to winter-
old trees adorn new garments
spring's ribbons of light
four squirrels running
playing in frosty new snow
silence after storm
Tumbleweed snowmen
Thistle rolling across plains
Winter gathering
From ice skimmed waters
Mists rise, fusing earth with sky
Under splintered moon
Dead trees darkened skies
Winter silhouettes invert
Sparklers in July
Trees are whispering
a song of pure solitude
on a winter day.
White snowflake ballet
No orchestra plays along
Boots galumph and crunch
Snow on a full moon;
The bare branches click lightly
And then all is still.
Ignorance, not bliss
white-knuckled, blizzard beauty
mountains, without chains
As the mountain snow
shrouds the meadow, God whispers,
be still and listen.
cold winter evening
buck-deer stands in churchyard light
his breath comes in clouds
Old cat purrs softly
Within aging, wrinkled arms.
It is Winter now.
Wind on a mountain
whips snow high into piles
toppling time beneath.
Snow falls on Mt. Hope
In the mirror the old face
Looking back is me.
mercy is reserved
for those who have kept their life -
sulking snow at dusk
She has been replaced.
Like the splinter of winter.
She retains her edge.
in winter, we sleep
tomorrow brings nourishment
our spring attunement
Cold winter evening
Cardinal on snowy bough...
Truly feeling blue
Early spring sunshine
Resilient daffodils
Defying the frost
Winter breathes so long,
spring whispers after darkness,
an encore not far.
The trees are naked,
Bereft of leaves, winter's curse
Yet birds are singing
Snow-covered pansies
Insulated from harsh cold
Fitly re-emerge
winter afternoon -
the white carnations blooming
behind my paintbrush
While on fallen ice
Tires wrestle midnight roads-
An impatient lure
honking geese fly north
winter melt begins-spring comes
one drip at a time
Carpet of fresh snow
stretches unblemished on lawn
awaiting footprints
cricket in my wall
safe from freezing rain and wind
calling for a friend
